Republic of Tea Strawberry Chocolate Rooibos Tea Review
A Tasty Tea That Nicely Blends Chocolate & Strawberry
Summary : While no substitute for eating a raw strawberry or a good chocolate bar, this tea does nicely blend strawberry and chocolate to produce a pleasant tea.
Review : Over the past week, I've tried two of the five varieties of chocolate teas from the Republic of Tea "Cuppa Chocolate" collection. I've been disappointed in both due, especially the Peppermint Chocolate tea. The teas weren't bad, but I felt calling them a "chocolate tea" was a bit of a stretch due to their lack of a good and strong chocolate flavor.
As such, when my chocolate craving struck again and I found myself searching for a chocolate among my tea samplers, I approached the Republic of Tea Strawberry Chocolate with low expectations. Still, as the saying goes, venture nothing - gain nothing. Thus, I decided to give this tea a try on a chilly Nevada night.
Here is how the Republic of Tea describes their Strawberry Chocolate tea : "Decadent chocolate paired with a hint of strawberry in this seductively delicious cup. Rooibos, or red tea, provides the base in which these two flavors mingle. Sipping this delicious dessert tea together may inspire a long and loving life for you and your sweetheart."
PS...according to the Republic of Tea, this tea was featured on the NBC Today show as one of the top 10 Skinny Foods all dieters should try.
This chocolate tea contains the following ingredients : rooibos, carob, cocoa kernels, natural chocolate flavor, natural strawberry flavor, sweet blackberry leaves and bourbon vanilla beans.
I'll fully admint that my already low expectations for this tea fell further once I opened the foil wrapper. The aroma of chocolate was weak at best, and the aroma of strawberry wasn't much stronger. In short, the tea lacked the pungent fragrance I was hoping for - and expecting.
Once brewed, the tea is a light brown color and has virtually no fragrance at all. So, yet another strike against this tea before I even took my first sip.
Yet, in another invaluable lesson of life, the taste of this tea surprised me. I was expecting a weak chocolate tea with a strong flavor of rooibos - and with no flavor of strawberry whatsoever (told you my expectations were low). But what I found was a pleasant rooibos tea with a moderately strong strawberry and chocolate flavor that blended quite nicely.
While the flavor of chocolate and strawberry are of moderate strength, which disappointed me to a degree, I still found the teas flavor quite enjoyable. The blend of strawberry and chocolate flavors in this tea seems to work, producing a pleasant if not exactly overwhelming tea.
Another surprise was that the sometimes strong rooibos flavor found in infused rooibos teas was mysteriously - and happily - absent in this tea. In the past two chocolate teas I tried from the Republic of Tea, the roobios flavor was quite strong - most likely burying whatever other flavoring had been added to the tea. Fortunately, that problem was absent with the Strawberry Chocolate tea.
What about the aftertaste? Well, this is where this tea somewhat fails, at least if you are looking for a tea with a potent and lingering aftertaste. For better or for worse, the Strawberry Chocolate tea from the Republic of Tea has an "ok" aftertaste that quickly disappears within a a few minutes. Whether that is good or bad, well, I'll let you be the judge on that.
Overall, this is a good but not great chocolate tea. I personally prefer my chocolate teas have a stronger flavor found in this one, but...the flavor in this tea is strong enough for me to actually have enjoyed drinking it. The blending of chocolate and strawberry flavor works in this tea, and the chocolate flavor is just strong enough to at least partially satisfy chocoloholics like me.
Recommendation : Yes. The moderate chocolate and strawberry flavors work nicely in this tea. While neither flavor is strong or overpowering, blended together, the tea "simply works." Just don't expect the tea to be an equivalent of munching on a strawberry or a chocolate candy bar.
