Republic of Tea Red Velvet Chocolate Rooibos Tea Review
A Disappointing Chocolate Tea
Summary : This tea is no substitute for "something with chocolate" in it. The tea itself doesn't taste bad, but in terms of chocolate flavor the tea comes up rather empty.
Review : I love chocolate, pure and simple. I just hate the calories that come with satisfying my inner-chocolate craving.
Thus, I found myself on a rainy evening craving chocolate. Since I had no chocolate in the house - not even chocolate milk - I rummaged through the recent tea samplers I ordered. And there I re-discovered the "Cuppa Chocolate" teas from the Republic of Tea. So, craving chocolate, I opened the box up and picked out the first tea I found, which happened to be the Red Velvet Chocolate Rooibos Tea.
That this tea from Republic of Tea was a rooibos tea was not a surprise. See, rooibos tea is frequently used for chocolate teas since rooibos tea can be steeped longer than teas that use pure tea leaves - without becoming bitter. This allows the chocolate flavor to, usually, be much stronger. Additionally, rooibos tea does not have the powerful flavor found in black tea (which is often infused with chocolate, too), thus allowing the chocolate flavor to be more distinct when used with a rooibos tea.
Anyways, that is the theory. And fresh out of the package, I did indeed have high hopes for this tea. While far from overpowering, the fragrance of the tea definitely had a pleasant chocolate aroma - giving me hope that I might indeed be able to satisfy my chocolate craving tonight.
Here is how the Republic of Tea describes their Red Velvet Chocolate tea : "Have your cake and sip it too! Indulge your sweet tooth with this healthy, caffeine-free infusion. Rooibos is blended with chocolate and beet root bits to taste just like the classic red velvet cake. The perfect cup to accompany birthdays and other celebrations."
PS...according to the Republic of Tea, this tea was featured on the NBC Today show as one of the top 10 Skinny Foods all dieters should try.
This chocolate tea contains the following ingredients : rooibos, beet root bits, sweet blackberry leaves, natural chocolate and vanilla flavors.
Once brewed, the tea is a reddish-brown color, and provided me with hopes that this tea might indeed be an ideal chocolate replacement by satisfying my sweet tooth.
But alas, it was not to be. I was very disappointed with the total lack of chocolate flavor found in this tea. The tea isn't bad by any stretch. It just that I was expecting a strong chocolate rooibos tea and instead basically discovered a rooibos tea that had only a weak, and fleeting, chocolate flavor that left me totally unsatisfied.
In short, this tea is very "weak" on the chocolate side of things, and is a lousy replacement for chocolate ice cream, chocolate cake, chocolate candy and basically anything else in the world that happens to contain chocolate.
The tea, similar to other straight rooibos teas, also lacked any sort of memorable aftertaste. Indeed, the tea barely has any aftertaste at all.
Overall, there are many excellent chocolate teas available. This creation from the Republic of Tea is not one of them.
Recommendation : It depends. This tea isn't bad tasting. Basically, it tastes almost like a pure rooibos tea - which means it is non-bitter, smooth but not especially memorable. Unfortunately, the selling point of this tea is supposed to be it's chocolate flavor. And in that regard, this tea comes up woefully short.
