Republic of Tea Peppermint Chocolate Rooibos Tea Review
A Surprisingly Weak Peppermint Chocolate Tea
Summary : Not a bad tasting tea, but I found the flavor of the tea far too weak for my tastes. There's virtually no peppermint flavor at all, and the chocolate flavor is "weak at best."
Review : Following my disappointing experience with the Republic of Tea's Red Velvet Chocolate Tea last night, I was left with an unfulfilled chocolate craving. And so I pulled out another chocolate tea from the "Cuppa Chocolate" tea sampler I ordered from the Republic of Tea, hoping beyond hope that my chocolate craving would at long last be satisfied.
The tea I yanked out of my sampler box was called Peppermint Chocolate. Immediately my hopes leaped through the roof, as peppermint and chocolate are two of my most beloved ingredients. There are few things in life I do not like when peppermint and chocolate are combined together, so I really thought that this tea and I were destined to have a most satisfying and long lasting experience.
Here is how the Republic of Tea describes their Peppermint Chocolate tea : "This cuppa is your gateway to guilt-free indulgence. A joyous chorus of creamy, cool peppermint, rich chocolate and smooth, caffeine-free rooibos will make you sing throughout the day. Relish in the calorie-free, healthful pleasure."
PS...according to the Republic of Tea, this tea was featured on the NBC Today show as one of the top 10 Skinny Foods all dieters should try.
The peppermint chocolate tea from the Republic of Tea contains the following ingredients : rooibos, carob, cocoa kernals, peppermint leaves, sweet blackberry leaves, natural mint, chocolate and vanilla flavors.
Straight out of the foil wrapper, the teas fragrance did not disappoint. While I did find it surprising that I could barely find any aroma of peppermint (usually peppermints fragrance is very noticeable), I did indeed notice a very pleasant chocolate aroma emanating from the tea bag. As such, while I waited the seven minutes for the tea to brew, my hopes continued to creep skyward.
But just like last night, my hopes for this tea were dashed on the rocks of despair as as reality intervened. While this tea definitely had a more noticeable chocolate flavor than the Red Velvet Chocolate tea I tried, the chocolate flavor was still disappointingly weak. For sure, nobody will mistake the chocolate flavor in this tea for any sort of real chocolate found in ice cream, chocolate candy, etc...
And perhaps worse, the tea had virtually zero peppermint flavor. I detected a very faint peppermint flavor on the first sip, but after the first sip any trace of peppermint flavor disappeared - perhaps swallowed up by the moderate rooibos flavor of the tea. Only after I finished the tea did I notice a faint peppermint aftertaste lingering around, which was pleasant for sure. But the complete lack of peppermint flavor found while drinking the tea was a very surprising disappointment.
Overall, there are many excellent chocolate and mint teas available. This creation from the Republic of Tea is not bad, but it pales in comparison to other good chocolate and mint teas. The flavor of the tea is simply to weak to satisfy someone like me who seeks a strong chocolate and mint flavor.
Recommendation : It depends. This tea isn't bad tasting, and it does have a weak chocolate flavor with the most fleeting peppermint flavor thrown in for fun. But overall, I found the tea far too weak for my liking. Still, if you prefer a more subdued tea - where the flavor doesn't jump out from the cup and grab you by the throat - then perhaps you'll enjoy this tea more than me.
