Numi Red Mellow Bush Rooibos Tea
Review
A Decent Organic Rooibos Tea
Summary : This tea is nothing fancy. Just straight
rooibos. I personally found the taste decent, but certainly nothing
out of the ordinary. Individuals who enjoy straight rooibos should like
this tea to some extent, but probably won't find anything to get too
terribly excited over. People who enjoy vanilla teas will probably like
this tea too...to some degree.
Review : Rooibos tea is becoming increasingly popular.
This is due to several reasons, not the least of which is that unlike
green tea or black tea, rooibos tea has no caffeine. So it is similar
to herbal teas in that regard. Yet, unlike most herbal teas, rooibos
teas do have some antioxidants in them, although not as much as found
in traditional green or black teas.
Due to these two health benefits in rooibos teas (no caffeine and the
presence of antioxidants), there is an increasing variety of rooibos teas
available. Many rooibos teas come in various "flavors," some of which are
incredibly tasty.
But of course, like all teas, you can also drink rooibos tea "straight
up," with nothing added or infused into the tea. And this is what I found
myself drinking on a February afternoon, a straight rooibos tea from Numi
Teas called Red Mellow Bush Rooibos. Here is how Numi describes this tea on their website : "Grown in
the high desert regions of the Cederberg Mountains, the shoots of Rooibos
have been hand gathered by South Africans for generations. It is prepared
like a traditional tea, undergoing meticulous drying (oxidation) and cutting.
Organic Red Mellow Bush has an earthy vanilla taste and pleasing orange
color with hints of autumn straw. With an anti-oxidant level comparable
to green tea, Rooibos has no caffeine, is rich in minerals, very low in
tannin, and is relaxing to the nerves. No wonder they call it the miracle
tea. Discover the wonders of Rooibos!"
This organic tea contains exactly one ingredient : Organic South African
Rooibos.
The aroma of this tea is pretty boring, truthfully. But then again, other
straight rooibos teas have a boring aroma too, so I can't knock Numi for this.
Instead, I'll knock Numi for the somewhat boring flavor of this tea. Compared
to some other straight rooibos teas I've tried, particularly those in loose-leaf
form, I found the flavor of this tea to be awfully "bland," for lack of a better
way to describe it. The flavor wasn't bad...just rather boring.
Now, the tea does have a fairly strong vanilla flavor to it. So if you like
other vanilla teas out there...something I've discovered I really don't, then
I think the odds are high you'll enjoy this tea more than I did.
Overall, this isn't a bad tea, but it is nothing special either. I would definitely
suggest to someone who has never tried a rooibos tea before...find another
one to try. There are far better
ones out there.
Recommendation : Maybe. This is far from the greatest rooibos
tea around, but it isn't bad either. If you enjoy other "straight" rooibos
teas, particularly ones that have a hint of vanilla flavor in it, you may like
this tea to some degree. But I definitely would not recommend this tea to someone
who has never tried a rooibos tea before...there are far better ones.
