Tazo Calm Herbal Tea Review
A Chamomile Tea That Nicely Mixes
Spearmint and Peppermint
Summary : If you need to calm down, or want to become
sleepy before bedtime, then chamomile teas are the way to go. And especially
ones like this tea from Tazo, which has a a nice, subdued peppermint
and spearmint taste to it too.
Review : Chamomile teas can be rather tasteless teas.
This is not entirely by accident. After all, chamomile teas are truly
the perfect "bedtime tea." Without fail, after drinking a chamomile
tea, I'm usually off to bed. Yet, while many chamomile teas make me sleepy,
few of them actually taste that good.
And so I was greatly surprised when I popped the container on Tazo's
Calm Herbal Tea. I was expecting no smell whatsoever, and instead was
greeted by the delightful aroma of peppermint and spearmint - my two
favorite mints!
Tazo's Calm Herbal Tea infusion contains the following ingredients :
chamomile blossoms, hibiscus flowers, spearmint leaves, rose petals,
blackberry leaves, peppermint leaves, safflower, lemon balm, lemon grass
and natural flavorings.
As a general rule of thumb, I've noticed that when I like the aroma
of a tea before brewing, the odds are I will enjoy the fully brewed version.
And happily, I can report that this was the case here.
Now, keep in mind here, this tea will NOT knock you out of your shoes
with its overpowering taste. This is, after all, a chamomile tea. You
know, one designed to put you to sleep? And a bedtime tea really shouldn't
have a powerful taste - otherwise it defeats the whole purpose.
Likewise, a bedtime tea should not have a strong after-taste. While
I love mint, right before bedtime, I usually don't want to have a mint
after-taste lingering around for hours.
So...with these two things in mind, I'm happy to report that Tazo's
Calm tea met both of these requirements. The tea has a delightful, light
yet refreshing taste to it. The ingredients mix nicely to produce what
is essentially a light peppermint/spearmint tea with a bit of the typical
chamomile tea flavor thrown in for good measure.
Yet, the taste is not nearly as strong as a quality loose-leaf
peppermint tea or a loose-leaf
spearmint tea. And of course, right before bedtime, this is a very
good thing. The two teas linked to above will, quite literally, knock
you out of your socks with their potent tastes and powerful aromas
- and are thus not really good candidates for a bedtime or relaxation
tea.
And finally, the after-taste of this tea is fleeting at best. And it
is not that strong, either. Instead, the after-taste, what little there
is, is a light and pleasant mint taste that soon disappears - right at
the time that the chamomile "kicks in" and starts making you
sleepy!
All in all, Tazo's Calm is just a perfect bedtime tea. And just like
other good chamomile teas, having now consumed this one I'm getting sleepy!
And so, I'm going to wrap up this review and crawl back into bed. Night.
Recommendation : Absolutely. A delightful, light tasting
chamomile tea that combines peppermint and spearmint for a great tasting "bedtime" tea.
A perfect tea for relaxation or to take before bedtime. Definitely not
a tea to "pick you up", though, that's for sure.
