Republic of Tea Ginseng & Peppermint
Tea Review
A Very Unique Tasting Herbal Tea
Summary : This tea from the Republic of Tea smells
strongly of peppermint. But, once brewed, this tea tastes more like a
rather sweet licorice tea. The flavor of peppermint is sort of lost,
buried behind the sweet licorice taste. But it is still a tasty and enjoyable
tea.
Review : This was the first ever tea from the Republic
of Tea that I tried. I had been wanting to try their teas for a while,
but could never locate them...at least here in the tea capital of the
world, Reno, Nevada.
But alas, I found a place online where I could buy all that I needed, Herbal Remedies.Com. And so during my last tea order I picked up a pile of teas from the
Republic of Tea to see what they were like.
The first I tried out was their Ginseng Peppermint Herbal Tea. The reason
for this is because it was late at night and, quite simply, I was in
the mood for something very sweet. And a tea that contains peppermint,
ginseng and licorice should be very sweet...at a minimum!
Here is the description of this tea as provided by Republic of Tea :
"A healthy blend of eleuthero, peppermint, cinnamon, licorice, and echinacea
root. This masterful blend offers herbal benefits and a naturally sweet,
smooth, pleasing flavor."
This tea contains the following ingredients : eleuthero,
peppermint, cinnamon, licorice, shizandra berries, sasparilla root, panax
ginseng,
and echincea pur purea root.
A loose-leaf tea was used for this review, by the way, so don't be confused
by the tea box photo on the right! In any event, once I opened up the
package that held the leaves I was greeted with a strong aroma of peppermint
(no surprise there), along with a weak smell of cinnamon and licorice.
The aroma was quite unique...definitely not what I thought it would be
like (I was expecting a more true peppermint tea aroma).
Once brewed, the flavor of this tea is "all it's own," for lack of a
better way to describe it. I was really expecting a strong peppermint
flavor to this tea, simply because peppermint has a very strong flavor
and tends to overhwhelm many other flavors. But not here. Instead, once
brewed...this tea essentially becomes a licorice tea!
Now, if you have never tried a licorice tea...hah...you are in for a
big surprise! You see, licorice is a natural sweetener...and a very,
very sweet sweetener at that. The taste of licorice just lingers and
lingers. And more importantly for our review here, the flavor of licorice
simply overpowers any/all flavors in a tea I've discovered. As such,
any tea that contains a health amount of licorice in it will inevitably
taste like licorice...with most of the other flavors in the tea simply
"vanishing" to a large extent.
And that is exactly what happened with this Ginseng Peppermint tea.
Once brewed, well, good luck finding the ginseng, cinnamon or peppermint
flavors...since this tea is licorice tea pure and simple once brewed.
In any event, if you love sweet teas...and in particular licorice teas...you'll
definitely love this sweet creation from the Republic of Tea. However,
if you are looking for something "less sweet" or more like peppermint,
then pass on this tea...as you'll get a big and probably not very pleasant
surprise!
Recommendation : Yes. If you love sweet teas, and adore
teas with licorice in it, you'll fall in love with this tea guaranteed.
However, if peppermint is more your thing and the sweet flavor of a licorice
tea is "too much" for you, you'll be better off finding a true
peppermint tea instead.
