Numi Temple of Heaven Gunpowder
Green Tea
A Very Enjoyable Organic Gunpowder
Green Tea
Summary : This green tea, which is organic, has a very
nice, subtle and non-bitter taste...just as a gunpowder green tea should.
While not quite as good as some loose-leaf gunpowder green teas I've
had, for a bagged tea, this one from Numi Teas is first-rate.
Review : Heartfelt confession here. I always, repeat
always, am "just a bit leery" of trying bagged green teas. I've just
been burned by so many bad ones that I just can't help but feel a bit
of trepidation whenever I try a bagged green tea, even when those teas
originate from premium bagged tea brands such as Numi
Teas and Tazo.
And so it was with a bit of dread that the tea I mindlessly plucked
out of my Numi sampler box was a gunpowder green tea. Should I put it
back? Should I ignore it...hoping it might go away? Should I open up
the bag and see what effect the tea leaves might have on my cat? Or,
should I summon up the courage and give this bagged (yikes!) tea a try?
Ultimately, courage won the day, and I went off and gave this tea from
Numi Teas a try.
Here is how Numi describes this tea : "Our whole leaf Temple of
Heaven - Gunpowder Green Tea is gently steamed within hours of being
plucked, then skillfully hand rolled into small tight pearls. This process
preserves its delicate flavor and aroma far longer than other green teas.
Steeped in hot water, the leaves unfurl, releasing a well-rounded, full-bodied
flavor. Rich in fluoride, calcium, and anti-oxidants - and with very
little caffeine - this is a perfect choice to greet the evening."
This organic green tea from Numi contains
the following ingredients : Whole Leaf Gunpowder Green Tea pearls.
The aroma of this tea was pretty much what I expected...rather surprisingly.
This tea actually smelled very similar to organic gunpowder loose leaf
teas I've tried. The aroma was a tad weaker, of course...but still unmistakeable.
And so I took this as a good sign.
Happily, the flavor of the tea didn't disappoint. For those who have
never had gunpowder green tea before, the taste is very subtle, very
light and yet has a hint of sweetness about it. Truthfully, gunpowder
green tea is probably my favorite "straight green tea."
The taste of this green tea from Numi thankfully tasted exactly like
what a gunpowder green tea should taste like. The flavor was light, the
taste was subtle and yes....no bitterness here! About my only complaint,
of which I wasn't surprised about, is that the flavor of the tea was
a "bit weak" if you compared it to a quality loose-leaf gunpowder green
tea. But still...for a bagged green tea...I truthfully had no complaints.
The after-taste of this green tea is fleeting at best. But, then again,
green teas don't exactly have the worlds most powerful of after-tastes
to begin with, so no real surprise there. Still, what little after-taste
there is sort of disappears very quickly...and isn't nearly as strong
as compared to a loose-leaf gunpowder green tea.
Recommendation : Yes. For a bagged, supermarket brand
green tea, this tea from Numi is excellent. The flavor is exactly
what a gunpowder green tea should taste like. My only real complaint
is that when stacked up against a good loose-leaf gunpowder green tea,
the flavor is weaker than I would like. But oh well...can't have everything
in life. And bagged teas are indeed convenient.
