Numi Berry Black Fruitea Darjeeling
Black Tea
A North American "Fruity Black Tea"
Summary : A surprisingly good "fruit black tea." This
tea nicely combines the healthy benefits of a black tea (antioxidants)
with the wonderful flavor of strawberries and raspberries.
Review : I found myself in the mood for somethint different
this afternoon. I didn't know what. I really didn't care. Just long as
it was "different" was all that mattered. So I stuck my hand blindly
into my tea and pulled up a long forgotten about bag of darjeeling black
tea from Numi Teas, called Berry Black Fruitea Darjeeling Black Tea.
Here is how Numi describes this tea : "Extraordinary and the first of
its kind, Numi's organic Berry Black features real North American forest
fruits, not artificial or natural flavorings, to create an authentic
berry taste. Our luscious strawberries and raspberries are freeze-dried
at the peak of ripeness to retain their true flavor. This sassy, organic
tea is fresh, wild, and all natural, blending hibiscus, Vitamin C-loaded
rosehips, and a touch of smooth organic Darjeeling. Grown in the high
mountains of India, Numi's special Darjeeling adds a floral balance as
it captures the depth of black tea."
A black tea...with strawberries...and raspberries? Hmmm.....xell...if
you say so. Or any event, that was my initial reaction when I pulled out
a bag of this tea from my Numi Sampler Box.
This tea contains the following ingredients : organic Darjeeling Black
Tea leaves, Organic hibiscus, Organic freeze-dried strawberries, Organic
freeze-dried raspberries, Organic rosehips, Organic raspberry leaf.
The flavor of this tea is very, very surprising. Being a black tea,
I was truly prepared for the very strong flavor found in your typical
black tea...with just a hint of the strawberries and raspberries that
go into this tea.
Instead, what I discovered is that this tea tastes more like a herbal
tea than a black tea. Indeed, you will be hard pressed to find the traditional
darjeeling black tea flavor in this tea...so strong is the flavor from
the strawberries and raspberries.
Even better, Numi really pulled a neat trick here. Many "fruity teas"
have a wild taste to them...and are almost too fruity. Yet, Numi somehow
blends the ingredients in this tea to produce a flavor I would describe
as "just right"...not being too fruity...but not being dull or blah either.
In any event, if you love strawberries or raspberries...or better yet
both...you WILL very much enoy this tea. Simple and end of story. On
the other hand, if you are looking for a darjeeling black tea that has
a "unique flavor", you may or may not like this tea based on your mood
and what you want...simply because this tea has no flavor of darjeeling
whatsoever!
Recommendation : Yes. This is an excellent earl grey
tea that manages to be a bit on the spicy side without using any pepper.
Plus, like most other Numi teas, this earl grey tea is organic too.
